The Towson Dance Team is preparing for another win at the National Dance Association competition in Daytona, Fla.
The team is trying to claim their 12th national champion title this April.
Coach Tom Cascella chose 16 girls out of the 33 members of the team to dance this year at college nationals. In addition, he added four alternates to the squad in case of injury or mishap that may result in a girl’s suspension from the team.
Cascella chose his squad based on his formal evaluation of the girls while performing their demanding routine.
“I choose the girls that I think could handle a dance this hard,” said Cascella. “As a coach, you really have to see who can take their energy and emotion and apply it on stage. I hate not being able to dance all of the girls, but I know that physically and mentally some of these women are not at the level that I need them to be.”
Jazz, hip-hop and pom are the three prominent styles of dance that make up the routine. The 16 girls are involved in an ongoing process to perfect every move by dancing the three sections a number of times. They build up their stamina each time the routine is performed at practice.
Cascella’s sole focus is the cleanliness of the routine. He and the squad take a lot of time going over technique and formations.
The team practices four days a week for a total of 18 hours. Practice is held on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon until 6:00 p.m..
Despite the rigorous hours in the studio, these girls continue to put even more work into the classroom.
